Photographer Safi Alia Shabaik has looked at the world through a viewfinder almost her entire life. What may seem mundane or unspectacular to the untrained eye is a world of mystery and stories to the artist. The award-winning Shabaik started off as a child with a simple pinhole camera and continued on to UCLA where she mastered the art of black & white and color photography. Safi Alia Shabaik knows how to capture the shared experience of life in still image with her creative family portraiture.
Shabaik spent some time working both in the film industry and as a stylist for the infamous 1999 Beautiful Monsters Tour for the band Hole. Now, she focuses on a style of creative family portraiture that suits her talents beyond measure. She lived in New York for some time, but she moved back to California after the events of 9/11.
This artist finds perfection in capturing the moment. Photos of children and family, be it posed or candid, carry with each of them a story behind the stillness. Her photography of women during pregnancy is complimented by a fondness for the personal stories within. From maternity to playtime, she takes on the full journey of the life cycle, pausing along the way to take it all in.
Safi Shabaik’s web site also houses musings from the photographer herself in regards to the medium of photography and the work of others. Her curiosity for the story behind each image is apparent in how she views art to be equal to the experience of life itself.
