Julie Mehretu

As soon as we saw Julie Mehretu’s art, we felt its magnetism.  Her massive works feel like calculated chaos; colorful fragments of geometric shapes seemingly floating amongst conglomerations of sharpness.  It feels like an art equation put through a shredder and then let go into space, where gravity has no chance.  We’d love to see her work displayed in a gallery setting – the shot of the person walking by her massive canvas gives a new perspective to her images; rendering those shapes with the scale they deserve (especially considering how much her work makes us think of galaxies). That’s it!  Galaxies of shapes!  Julie was born in Ethiopia and has shown her work all over the world. Kudos to her.
