“Reclining Venus”

I am especially happy when one of my friends creates something that moves me. This is the work of Risa Truesdell, friend and artist. The last of the three paintings is my favorite. I see Risa’s stuff as being more about portraying an emotion than telling a story, and I think she does that very well. Here’s what she has to say about it:

“I try to convey emotion through color and brush stroke I suppose. And yes, most of my stuff is naked women ;) . This is for 3 reasons: 1) models tend to be women 2) clothing is harder to do, typically also kind of dates the painting making it less iconic. My senior thesis in college was on Body Modification in the Post-Modern World..I was really into the body-identity connection, so this also follows that I do a lot of nudes. 3) I am a woman, so it makes sense for me to paint about women. I really think that every painting is a type of self portrait, even when we are painting a portrait of someone or (some)thing else. It always ends up being about the artist, really.”

We are in agreement. And well done.
