The Cool School

Published on December 15, 2009

The Cool School is a film by director Morgan Neville, about the burgeoning art scene in Los Angeles in the late 1950′s that centered around the Ferus Gallery. This group of young artists questioned the norms of modern art and pushed the boundaries of what art could be. The film takes a very close look at the people who made it happen, and the art that drew people’s attention to this new scene in LA. History is always useful, but I often feel as though people cling to it, for some notion of security or possession. Art shouldn’t be limited in any way, and despite their many imperfections, I admire this group for doing what they felt.

The film is available via your PS3 or ROKU player with your Netflix account, and notably, is narrated by The Dude, a.k.a. Jeff Bridges.

There is also a fantastic quote towards the end of the film by Walter Hopps, who was instrumental in building Ferus Gallery’s popularity. It’s as follows:

“Art offers the possibility of love with strangers.”
