Father John Misty – Fear Fun

This record wreaks of genuine emotion, and we couldn’t love it more. Father John Misty, who’s real name is Joshua Tillman, is the former drummer of Fleet Foxes. It appears FJM left the band, loaded up his van, packed the psilocybin, and recorded an incredible album. You can hear the man’s soul on the record, in a way that feels extremely bare, and honest. Psych folk might be an apt description, but regardless of what you call it, this is important music. “Funtimes in Babylon” opens the door and warmly welcomes you into the sonic world you’re about to inhabit. “Hollywood Forever Cemetary Sings” is the single for a reason, as its psychedelic presence is punctuated by an expansive guitar riff, deliberately eloquated vocals, and intense content…

“We should let this dead guy sleep, We should let this dead guy sleep

Jesus Christ, girl, I laid up for hours in a daze
Retracing the expanse of your American back
With Adderall and weed in my veins
You came, I think
Cause the marble made my cheeks look pink
But I’m unsure of so many things

Someone’s got to help me dig, Someone’s got to help me dig, Someone’s got to help me dig”

“I’m Writing A Novel” uses a bluegrass rhythm to concoct a smokey blend that will make your hand slap your thigh to the beat. The Beatles-esque riff on “This Is Sally Hatchet” fades into a folk jam supplemented by dissonance. The folky and blues backbone is what most draws the ear to this collection of tracks. The composition on “Tees Pees 1-12″ is also a function of the sway of the record, holding the rhythmic theme. There is a potency we can’t quite describe, but which peacefully bleeds from the spakers in question. This album is fantastic, we highly suggest you buy yourself the vinyl. We did. Make sure to watch the videos below… they’re gooooood. Father John Misty is top notch.
