IPaintMyMind Audio Series: Episode 38 – DJ Major Taylor (Sound Of The Beast)

February 4th, 2015 Posted by Featured, IPMM Audio Series, Music No Comment yet

For all the care-free jams in the world, there are a handful that get at the heart of the matter. It’s in the music itself as much as it’s in the lyrics, and we couldn’t think of a better audio curator to shed light on some important songs that yield a sobering and more realistic view of the whole.

DJ Major Taylor aka Ralph Darden (Chicago / LA) does his thing at various staple locations, bringing rooms to life with the music and his smile. He stowed the smile away for this offering, if only because there’s a lot more to say this time around.

At IPaintMyMind, we don’t condone violence, but we do acknowledge the complexity of our world, as well as the role artists play in offering creative social commentary. This mix is that.

Thanks to Ralph for bringing this collection to life. Clearly, the emotions of injustice can’t be confined by places like Ferguson, MO.

As always, in their own words:

‘Man, the duplicitous balance of trying to be a critical, socially conscious human, while maintaining a DJ career. It’s not easy. DJ’ing is a performing art with no president or platform for any kind of critical engagement of broader substantive issues. No one ever hosts a discussion panel about sexism or race or class or politics and invites a DJ.They might invite a visual artist, a writer, a poet, a singer, a songwriter, maybe even a rapper, but never a DJ. When people come to see me spin they tend to want to do anything BUT think. They want a party and addressing this bleak world of multiple cascading crisis does not tend to go over well at parties.

But 2014 was infuriating year. I found myself welling up with rage in the wake of the routine murder of black people at the hands of the police & a profoundly damaged justice system, that seems completely ok with it. Juxtapose that against a weekly routine entitled white millennials going nuts for the most ratchet rap music without a care in the world. Its a recipe for resentment. Anger is powerful. We all feel it at some point but it’s what we do with it that defines the type of human we are.

I needed an outlet, an expression, a voice in an art form that is generally perceived as vacuous and voiceless. Then, while watching the events in Ferguson unfold, I remembered a quote from Martin Luther King:”A riot is the language of the unheard”.

I decided that Sound Of The Beast would be my 38 minute riot. Thanks for listening.”
