Last summer, while in Argentina, I walked into a record store in the Palermo Soho neighborhood. This wasn’t exactly your 2nd hand record store, but it was quaint, and best of all, the shopkeeper knew what he was talking about.
I had been listening to some “electronic tangos,” and and I liked these guys because the music was clearly more than just a tango on speed. When I asked the record-store-dude to point me in the right direction, he did, and I returned with Bajofondo’s latest release, Mardulce. A few weeks ago I was able to see Bajofondo at The House of Blues – Chicago and they were a lot of fun. Here’s what they have to say about their music:
“With Bajofondo,” says Santaolalla (guitar, precussion, vocals), “we don’t like the label ‘electronic tango’ because we try to make a contemporary music of Rio de la Plata (the river that forms part of the border between Argentina and Uruguay) music from Argentina, from Uruguay. Obviously, if you want to do music that comes from there or represents that part of the world tango is going to be part of it – but, in our case, so is rock ‘n’ roll, electronica and hip hop. Hopefully a new language, not pure tango.”
Check them out, tis tasty……. also available on amazon and itunes……
