Mercedes Sosa was an amazing singer and activist. Fleeing Argentina during the military regime, and speaking out against the atrocities of the dictatorship, her voice became an emblem for freedom and expression. For me, her voice is one of those uncannily familiar things that make up the tapestry of my life – listening to her music reverberate throughout my home as a kid, feeling her potency and energy. Her voice is beautifully haunting, epic yet relaxed. I feel that when she sang, she made herself vulnerable, in an honest and personal way that made me feel like I was able to catch a glimpse of her soul. She died in Buenos Aires, Argentina today at the age of 74 – she will be missed.
