John Mulvany (Austin, TX)
John Mulvany’s work made us do a double take. John is originally from Ireland, has exhibited in Europe and the USA, and his recent exhibition at grayDUCK Gallery was one we were sorry to have missed. The work is magical and eery, but also somehow sweet and sentimental. Sure, these people are floating, but we’re not scared of them. They loom in the foreground inviting the viewer to examine their superbly detailed clothing and backlit hovering headdresses.
Whether shadows or reflections, John is clearly adept, and we appreciate the way his paintings feel like glimpses into the past combined with the synergy of a UFO siting. His landscapes are incredible, with details popping out from tree branches and rows of shrubs where a much more generalized depiction would surely had sufficed. It’s a mixture of ghosts and dreams, and it’s fantastic.
John also founded the extremely worthy nonprofit art magazine called Cantanker. We highly suggest you give its pages a turn.
