Sammy Slabbinck Creates Collages That Tempt Perception
We’re massive fans of collage in all its many glorious forms. Every medium has its constraints, and perhaps its how well collage juxtaposes what at times feel like disparate elements to create surreal worlds. Belgian artist Sammy Slabbinck is adept at said art form. Whether putting a proper British gentlemen in a vast valley with an umbrella or combining images of 50’s femininity with newspaper clippings, it all jolts the mind beautifully.
His most amazingly disturbing collage is entitled ‘Lean On Me’ and features various human limbs reaching around each other, providing cover for a female’s face. It’s successful because it gets you asking questions, namely, what the hell is going on here? Whether psychedelic or messing with proportion, scope, and perspective, Sammy is proof of the power of collage; a medium that we find to be an incredible way for images & symbols to provide such ripe Freudian context and texture to onlookers.
He offers both digital prints & original hand cut collages on paper.
