10 Tips for Getting Out of a Creative Rut
Creativity is the spark necessary to create art, but even the most talented young artists can struggle with creative block. Creative block is a phenomenon where a person experiences a lack of inspiration, motivation, or ideas, making it difficult to create art. It can be frustrating and discouraging, but there are strategies you can use to overcome it.

Take a Break
Sometimes, the best thing to do is to step away from the art supplies and take a break. Go for a walk, listen to music, or read a book. Doing something else can help clear your mind and give you a fresh perspective.
Look for Inspiration
Inspiration can come from anywhere – nature, other artists, books, or movies. Look for inspiration in your surroundings and seek out new experiences. This can help spark new ideas and get your creative juices flowing. Research suggests that new experiences nourish your creativity. If you’re having trouble creating, you might need to feed the creative part of yourself!

Experiment and Break the Rules!
Trying out new techniques or materials can be a great way to break out of a creative rut. Experimenting with new materials or techniques can help you discover new possibilities and ways of creating art. Pablo Picasso recommends breaking the rules and getting a little crazy when you’re feeling stuck in the creative process!
Collaborate
Collaborating with other artists can be a great way to break out of a creative block. Working with others can help you generate new ideas and perspectives. Collaboration might be just the thing you need to kick into gear and finally get back into the mode of creating regularly. It can also be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to learn from others!

Keep a Sketchbook
Keeping a sketchbook is a great way to capture your ideas and work through your creative block. Sketching is a low-pressure way to explore ideas and experiment with different techniques. Try to implement a daily routine where you sketch for ten or fifteen minutes. Tell yourself that the sketches don’t have to be good or even finished. It’s just important to get something onto paper!
Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a practice that involves being present in the moment and paying attention to your thoughts and feelings. Practicing mindfulness can help you become more aware of your creative block and the thoughts and feelings that may be contributing to it. Often, creative block can be rooted in anxiety, self-doubt, or feelings of stagnation. Although it can be hard to pinpoint, it’s likely that something within your brain is holding you back. Pay attention to yourself and you might find that area of struggle or resistance.

Get Feedback
Getting feedback from other artists or art teachers can be helpful in overcoming creative block. Feedback can help you see your work from a different perspective and provide constructive criticism that can help you improve your skills.
Set Goals
Setting goals for yourself can help you stay motivated and focused. Setting small, achievable goals can help you build momentum and develop a sense of accomplishment. Incremental successes will help you scale up to larger projects, without feeling nervous or unsure of yourself.

Be Kind to Yourself
It’s important to remember that creative block is a normal part of the creative process. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you’re struggling to create. Remember that creativity is a journey, not a destination.
Just Start
Sometimes, the best way to get over creative block is to just start creating. Even if you’re not sure where to start or what to create, just start making marks on paper or canvas. You may be surprised at what emerges.
Creative block can linger for a while, which is super frustrating. However, it’s important to remember that all creatives experience creative block in one way or another. You’re in good company!
